A structure is a set of elements that work together to support external actions so that the object doesn't deform or break when forces act on it.
Natural structures — not made by people: tree trunks, beehives, shells, coral reefs.
Human-made structures — designed by people: bridges, buildings, tunnels, furniture.
A force is anything that can deform a body (static effect) or make it move / stop (dynamic effect).
Forces that act on structures are called loads:
| Load Type | Description | Mario Example |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed / Permanent | Don't change over time | Weight of castle walls, pipe weight |
| Variable | Change over time | Mario jumping on platforms, wind |
Forces that stretch objects
🎮 Mario stretching a rope
Forces that squeeze objects
🎮 Standing on a spring platform
Forces that try to bend objects
🎮 A flexible bridge level
Forces that twist objects
🎮 Turning a key or valve
Forces that divide objects
🎮 Scissors cutting a rope
| Frame Element | Primary Function | Force Type |
|---|---|---|
| Columns | Vertical support | Compression |
| Beams | Horizontal spanning | Bending |
| Braces | Diagonal stability | Tension / Compression |
The triangle is the strongest shape in engineering! Used in bridge trusses, tower cranes, roof frameworks, and the Eiffel Tower.
Every structure must meet three basic conditions:
Must remain upright and not fall over.
Methods: wide base, low centre of gravity, counterweights, guy wires.
Must bear the forces without breaking.
Like Mario blocks that don't break when you stand on them!
Must not deform too much.
Solutions: thick elements, triangulation, rigid joints, better materials.
| Arch Type | Shape | Used In |
|---|---|---|
| Semi-circular | Perfect half circle | Roman structures |
| Pointed (ogival) | Two curves at a point | Gothic cathedrals |
| Horseshoe | More than a semicircle | Islamic architecture |
