⭐ What Is a Structure?

A structure is a set of elements that work together to support external actions so that the object doesn't deform or break when forces act on it.

💡 KEY TYPES

Natural structures — not made by people: tree trunks, beehives, shells, coral reefs.

Human-made structures — designed by people: bridges, buildings, tunnels, furniture.

⭐ Forces, Loads & Effort

A force is anything that can deform a body (static effect) or make it move / stop (dynamic effect).

Forces that act on structures are called loads:

Load TypeDescriptionMario Example
Fixed / PermanentDon't change over timeWeight of castle walls, pipe weight
VariableChange over timeMario jumping on platforms, wind

⚡ 5 Types of Forces

TENSION

Forces that stretch objects

🎮 Mario stretching a rope

COMPRESSION

Forces that squeeze objects

🎮 Standing on a spring platform

BENDING

Forces that try to bend objects

🎮 A flexible bridge level

TORSION

Forces that twist objects

🎮 Turning a key or valve

SHEARING

Forces that divide objects

🎮 Scissors cutting a rope

⭐ Types of Structures

🧱 Mass Structures — lots of material piled up to resist forces.
Examples: pyramids, dams, thick castle walls.
🐚 Shell Structures — hollow, strong but use less material.
Examples: airplane fuselages, car bodies, helmets, turtle shells.
🔧 Frame Structures — connected elements form a framework (like scaffolding).
Frame ElementPrimary FunctionForce Type
ColumnsVertical supportCompression
BeamsHorizontal spanningBending
BracesDiagonal stabilityTension / Compression
🔺 KEY FACT

The triangle is the strongest shape in engineering! Used in bridge trusses, tower cranes, roof frameworks, and the Eiffel Tower.

⭐ Conditions of Structures

Every structure must meet three basic conditions:

1️⃣ STABILITY 🏰

Must remain upright and not fall over.
Methods: wide base, low centre of gravity, counterweights, guy wires.

2️⃣ RESISTANCE 💪

Must bear the forces without breaking.
Like Mario blocks that don't break when you stand on them!

3️⃣ RIGIDITY 🔒

Must not deform too much.
Solutions: thick elements, triangulation, rigid joints, better materials.

⭐ Evolution & Modern Innovations

🏛️ Arches & Vaults — curved structures that span large distances, distributing weight efficiently. Stone is ideal because it resists compression.
